The Problem

In many rural parts of India, extreme poverty turns basic hygiene into an unaffordable luxury. AITYS school visits have revealed a critical, often overlooked gap: teachers report that many students; both boys and girls do not own a single pair of underwear.

For boys, this lack of support leads to chronic hygiene issues, rashes, and health risks. For girls, the situation is compounded by menstruation; without underwear, they cannot use sanitary napkins even if provided, forcing them to rely on unsafe alternatives such as old cloth scraps, dried leaves, or even socks. This widespread lack of basic clothing strips children of their dignity, causes deep embarrassment, and drives high absenteeism and dropout rates for all students.
